Unfortunately, I put A Fatal Love to one side as I didn’t get on with the writing style. I moved onto Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton instead.
Dying isn’t any fun… but at least it’s a living.
Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous-even suicidal- the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. Mickey signed on to escape from both bad debts and boredom on Midgard.
After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal… and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.
When he goes missing and is presumed dead at the hands of deadly indigenous creatures, Mickey8 reports for duty, and their troubles really begin.
I’m currently reading The Sirens by Emilia Hart.
When Lucy arrives at her sister’s house in a wild panic, she doesn’t find the solace she’s desperately seeking – only an abandoned house, in a town steeped in mystery.
As Lucy searches for her sister, instead she uncovers tales of missing men. Stories of women drowned just off the coast two hundred years before. Rumours of their voices on the waves.
Can the voices lead Lucy to her sister – or are they trying to pull them both under?
My next read might be The Scapegoat by Daphne du Maurier.
He turned and stared at me and I at him, and I realised, with a strange sense of shock and fear and nausea all combined, that his face and voice were known to me too well. I was looking at myself.
By chance, two men – one English, the other French – meet in a provincial railway station. Their resemblance is uncanny, and they spend the evening talking and drinking. It is not until John wakes the next morning that he realises his French companion has stolen his identity and disappeared. So John steps into the Frenchman’s shoes, and faces a variety of perplexing roles – as owner of a chateau, director of a failing business, head of a fractious family, and master of nothing.
