This Week in Books – 16-12-20

This Week in Books is a feature hosted by Lipsy at Lipsyy Lost and Found that allows bloggers to share:

  • What they’ve recently finished reading
  • What they are currently reading
  • What they are planning to read next

The last book I finished reading was Moonflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz.

Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend. But life isn’t as idyllic as it should be: exhausted by the responsibility of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, Susan is beginning to miss her literary life in London – even though her publishing career once entangled her in a lethal literary murder plot.

So when an English couple come to visit with tales of a murder that took place in a hotel the same day their daughter Cecily was married there, Susan can’t help but find herself fascinated.

And when they tell her that Cecily has gone missing a few short hours after reading Atticus Pund Takes The Case, a crime novel Susan edited some years previously, Susan knows she must return to London to find out what has happened.

The clues to the murder and to Cecily’s disappearance must lie within the pages of this novel.

But to save Cecily, Susan must place her own life in mortal danger…

My current read is Victory of Eagles by Naomi Novik, the fifth instalment in the Temeraire series.

Laurence and Temeraire have betrayed the British. They have foiled their attempts to inflict death upon the French dragons by sharing the cure they found in Africa with their enemy.

But following their conscience has a price. Laurence feels he must return to face the consequences, and as soon as they land they are taken into custody. Laurence is condemned to the gallows and Temeraire faces a life of captivity in the breeding grounds. None of their friends or allies can come to their aid, for every hand is needed elsewhere.

Britain is completely unprepared for Bonaparte invasion and the advanced tactics of his own celestial dragon – Temeraire’s mortal enemy – Lien.

My next read might be The Goodbye Man by Jeffery Deaver.

Say goodbye to your problems
In pursuit of two armed fugitives in the wilderness of Washington State, unique investigator Colter Shaw witnesses a shocking suicide. This leads him to the Foundation – a cult that promises to transform peoples lives. But is there more to it than meets the eye?

Say goodbye to your freedom
Shaw goes undercover to expose the Foundation’s real purpose. Before long he meets the charismatic leader Master Eli, a man who commands terrifying loyalty from his followers.

Say goodbye to your life
Something truly dark is going on beneath the surface of the idyllic community. And as Shaw peels back the layers of truth, he begins to see there is only one way to escape the Foundation… and the price for that freedom might well be your very life.

    1. Big Little Lies is one of those books I think I should have read… Glad you enjoyed it! 😊

    1. I liked it, although maybe not as much as his others. Will check out your post shortly 🙂

    1. Oh dear! I liked it, but maybe not as much as his others. That said, it did come off the back of a DNF, so maybe it was just better than that… 😉

    1. I’ve enjoyed it so far – book four didn’t quite live up to my expectations, but ended on such a cliffhanger that I had to read book five!
