Monthly Wrap Up

The month that was… August 2025

I feel that Oops!… I Did It Again should now be considered the official soundtrack of Jo’s Book Blog. I started August with great intentions as to reading and reviewing regularly. And the month started well as I continued the momentum I’d built up in July. And then I hit a mahoosive reading slump. I didn’t want to read anything, and everything I tried to read wasn’t doing anything for me. I tried exciting new books, new books from favourite authors… Nothing worked.

Given that I was already behind with 15 Books of Summer, that was the final nail in the coffin, and I’ll admit that I’d given up by the time I came out of my reading slump – with all the will the in the world, I had no chance of turning that around, even if I’d chosen to drop down to 10 books.

On a more positive note, I ended the month with a family holiday in Portugal. This was a little more chaotic and boisterous than most of my holidays as there were ten of us including three teenagers, but good fun, and it was nice to spend time as a group.

My favourite books this month

No surprises here!

  • Into Thin Air by Ørjan Karlsson, translated by Ian Giles
  • Voyage of the Damned by Frances White
  • The Final Vow by M. W. Craven

I also read / reviewed:

  • Human Rites by Juno Dawson
  • The Art of a Lie by Laura Shepherd-Robinson
  • The House of Water by Fflur Dafydd
  • The Life Impossible by Matt Haig
  • No Friend to This House by Natalie Haynes
  • Fire and Blood by George R. R. Martin

Books acquired

I’m liking the orange / yellow theme of the top row!

TBR Watch

Some improvement, although it feels a little like cheating given that August saw more than the average number of DNFs.

And that’s my bookish month! Happy reading! 🩷

  1. Now you’ve done it, I will never be able to read another one of your blog posts again without hearing Britney in the background 😂

    1. 🤣 (I really want to come back with a witty rejoinder and more Britney lyrics, but I’ve got nothing!)

    1. Aren’t they just the worst?! I was saved by some Scandinavian noir, and Portugal definitely helped! x

  2. I’m so glad you enjoyed Voyage of the Damned too, Jo.

Sorry to hear about the slump. I’ve been battling one for months. It’s incredibly frustrating. Happy to see you’re back, though. You’re back, right? Right? 😜

    1. Yes – loved it! Really looking forward to Frances White’s next novel now.

      Ummm… yes? 😏

    1. Me too! I’m reading again, and blogging might still be a little hit and miss, but I’ll do my best!
