Well, it’s somehow September, and we’re now coming into autumn which is my favourite time of year. August was a good month, despite the decidedly mixed weather (have we even had a summer?!) It started with a week away with family, during which I got a surprising amount of reading done. I also spent the bank holiday weekend in Bath, one of my favourite cities in the UK. Having visited a number of times before, there was no pressure to do anything – my OH and I simply enjoyed being somewhere different, and it was a wonderful relaxing weekend.
Despite a good start to the month from a reading perspective, I then suffered a minor reading slump during which any book I picked up just didn’t take, even ones I’d been looking forward to. I may come back to them at some point – I’m becoming more of a mood reader, and so I suspect the issue was more me than the books. This did also mean that my blogging was a little hit and miss throughout the month, although I did – just! – manage to complete 20 Books of Summer! 🥳
Books Read and Reviewed
- Read in July, reviewed in August:
- The Square of Sevens by Laura Shepherd-Robinson
- Midnight at Malabar House by Vaseem Khan
- Read in August:
- Washington Black by Esi Edugyan*
- The Housekeepers by Alex Hay
- Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter
- Unraveller by Francis Hardinge
- Yellowface by Rebecca F. Kuang
- The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
- Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward
- Other Women by Emma Flint*
- Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter*
- The Snakehead by Patrick Radden Keefe
Books Acquired
I was a little more restrained this month, but not much, and the trip to Bath with it’s wonderful bookshops didn’t help matters, and 6 of those shown were purchased during that weekend! The Moor’s Account by Laila Lalami has just been republished by Bloomsbury, but being contrary, I sought out a copy of the original paperback from 2015.
TBR Watch
If there’s any benefit to a reading slump…
- Books out = 10 read + 3 DNF* = 13
- Books in = 9 purchases
- Gives a reduction of 4 in my TBR
*I may come back to the DNFs at a later date, but for now they have been removed from my TBR.

Reading slumps are horrible Jo, so I’m glad it was a small one. Here’s to September being slump free x
Thanks, Nicki! Happy reading x
“being contrary, I sought out a copy of the original paperback from 2015”
😂😂. I love that. And I’d probably be the same.
😂 This is such a me thing to do! But, I also don’t really like the new cover – I prefer the previous version 🤷🏻♀️
It’s great you could complete the challenge even with reading slump. I hope it stays away for the rest of the year. Have a great September!
Thank you, Yesha – me too! 🙂
