Another month down in this strange year, five to go. I hit a bit of a reading slump in July, and there were a few books that I picked up that I just couldn’t get into. I think I’m past it now, but we’ll see how it goes.
I’m looking forward to taking a week off from work in August, and I’m going to set some time aside to read the books that I want to read, rather than those that I ought to read for tours or in order to publish a review around the time of publication. I’m also planning a little blogging break this month, so don’t be surprised if I disappear for a week or so!
Despite my reading slump, I posted nine reviews in July. My favourite books of those reviewed were:
- Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
- Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce
- The Lost Plot by Genevieve Cogman
I also reviewed:
- The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
- Sealed by Naomi Booth
- The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski
- The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming Circle by Sophie Green
- The Search Party by Simon Lelic
- Keep Her Quiet by Emma Curtis
I also posted my prediction for this year’s Booker Prize longlist, as well as the actual longlist once it was announced.
We’re now two months into 20 Books of Summer, and I’ve read 17 of the twenty titles, and posted reviews for 14. I’m not one to count my chickens, but I think I’ve got this! The challenge of course is getting all of my reviews posted in time, but I think that this should be manageable. I’ll admit that the list of books I’ve read bears only a passing resemblance to the titles I originally selected though. Of the 17 I’ve read, 10 were on my original list…
TBR Watch
My TBR continues to gradually decrease, and I’ve now cleared my backlist of titles purchased prior to 2020. While I had a bit of a ropey start to the year, I’m hoping I can keep reducing my TBR along it’s current trajectory.

I love that chart you have with your TBR. I think I need something like that to make me realise that I have spending issues
😀 I do love an excuse to put a graph together.
You’re doing really well on the 20 Books challenge! Still plenty of time. And 10 books from the original list is still pretty awesome. I think I have less than that left and I’m not nearly done yet 😂
Hope you enjoy your week off, Jo! 😘
Thank you. Reading the books will be fine – getting the reviews out is another matter entirely… Might have to cram them in back-to-back at the end of the month! 😀
Great post! I hit a bit of a reading slump too, I’m hoping August is a better reading month than July!
Thank you! I think that we all get them from time to time – I just hope they pass quickly! Here’s to a better August! 🙂
Wow 17 books for 20 Books of summer is amazing Jo you’ve definitely got it! Hope you enjoy your week off xx
Thank you, Nicki! One week of work left to go… not that I’m counting down or anything… 😉
I have only read about five books for my 20 Books of Summer, challenge so far. Love the chart too, I have bought eleven books in the past couple of weeks so dread to think what mine would look like!!
I do love an excuse to roll out a graph! My TBR looks surprisingly low at the moment… Will have to see if I can keep it up!
Miss Benson’s Beetle is one of my favorite books of 2020!
I loved it – Margery and Enid are such marvellous characters! x
Joyce has SUCH a great imagination for interesting characters!
